The Stakes in Arizona

Arizona agriculture operates under some of the most complex water rights and scarcity conditions in the country. Soil Moisture Monitoring

Capacitance-based soil moisture sensors, deployed at multiple depths across a field, provide real-time data on plant-available water. When integrated with ET (evapotranspiration) models and weather data, these systems can generate irrigation recommendations that are far more precise than calendar-based or feel-based scheduling.

The ROI on soil moisture monitoring is well-documented: most growers see 15–25% reductions in applied water without yield penalty, and often with yield improvement due to better timing of irrigations.

Variable Rate Irrigation

For operations with center pivots, variable rate irrigation (VRI) technology allows different zones of a field to receive different application rates in a single pass. Combined with soil texture mapping and yield history data, VRI can eliminate over-irrigation of coarse-textured areas while ensuring adequate water reaches heavier soils.

AI-Driven Scheduling

The newest generation of irrigation management platforms uses machine learning to continuously refine irrigation recommendations based on observed crop response, weather forecasts, and historical patterns. These systems improve over time — the more data they accumulate from a specific field, the more accurate their recommendations become.
